There are golf courses in Spain that are beautiful. There are courses that are challenging. And then there is the Alhama Signature at Condado de Alhama — a course that is both of those things at once, and manages to feel like nowhere else you have ever played.
Designed personally by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 2010, the Signature is part of the six-course Nicklaus Golf Trail in Murcia, and it is widely considered one of the finest courses on the Iberian Peninsula. That is not an empty claim. When you stand on the first tee and take in the landscape stretching out in front of you — the Sierra Espuña mountains rising behind, 120,000 native Mediterranean plants framing the fairways, vast sweeps of sand filling the spaces between — you understand immediately that this is something different.
"Designed for all types of players, offering multiple options that make them think before executing the shot." — Jack Nicklaus
Nicklaus built the Signature in a desert style, and it looks like nowhere else in Spain. The landscaping is sculptural, dramatic, and occasionally feels like you are playing golf on the surface of a very beautiful planet. The circular tee boxes give the course a distinctive, almost artistic feel, and at every turn the Sierra Espuña mountain range provides one of the most dramatic backdrops in European golf.
The course stretches to 6,884 metres from the back tees — one of the longest in Spain — with a course rating of 77.4 and a slope of 140. It earns that slope.
The Greens: Fast, Fair and Unforgiving
The entire course is laid on Paspalum Platinum grass, chosen specifically because it handles the Spanish heat, heavy foot traffic and even salty irrigation water without flinching. The result is greens that stay fast and true all year round. That is great news for the quality of your putting — and demanding news for your scorecard.
Five large lakes run through the course, all very much in play. One hundred and sixteen bunkers are positioned with what can only be described as deliberate precision. This is a course built to make you think, and then think again.
18 holes • Par 72 • 6,884 metres (back tees) • 116 bunkers • 5 lakes • Rating 77.4 / Slope 140
Tee options for all levels: White (6,884m) · Yellow (6,059m) · Blue (5,741m) · Red (5,034m)
💡 The jump from Yellow to White is significant. Play the tee that suits your game — there are no prizes for ego on this course.
There will be holes that frustrate you. There will be bunkers you did not see coming. There will be a par 3 where the lake seems to take up more space than the green. And then there will be a moment — a long iron that holds the flag, a putt that finds the bottom of the cup, a view from a tee box that stops you in your tracks — and you will understand exactly why everyone who plays the Alhama Signature comes back.
